Coops and Cartels: Alleged Pigeons in Organized Crime

New Yorkers are laughing (and a bit fuming) over what some tabloids are calling “The Pigeon Bagel Heist.” In late September 2025, a cluster of bakeries in Brooklyn reported that poppyseed bagels were mysteriously vanishing overnight. Security cameras at Bagel Barn on Atlantic Avenue allegedly show a flock of pigeons working together to peck open a side door, shuffle into the kitchen, and waddle out with dozens of bagels. One baker, Luis Santiago, claims the birds have “learned the bakery’s schedule” and now appear minutes after closing. The New York Daily News ran a cover photo of a pigeon waddling off with an entire bagel speared on its beak. Residents are joking about a “carb cartel,” and at least one city councilman has proposed funding a pigeon-proof bagel bin initiative. If you come into contact with a carb-cartel pigeon, you are advised to report to local authorities immediately.
